Biography:

Born in Killarney, Ireland to Ciara and Thomas Flanagan. The father, Thomas or Tom was a fairly successful sheep farmer which provided an income that sustained the family's modest middle class lifestyle. It was expected that the young Blake would become yet another farmer to add to Ireland's agricultural community yet by the time he was 15, he was starting to show a much different knack. Fixing and Engineering.

He became the repairman for the family and began to branch out to the small community which he resided in and he grew his talent the more he learned. Eventually, he started to dream of working on large ships and shipyards which was a bittersweet reality for his family upon realizing that would mean Blake would probably be far from home.

by the time, he was 25, he had bid his family and Killarney goodbye and started off for the big city of Belfast. Upon giving the shipyard officials his credentials, he spent a period of being an apprentice, a period of a little over a year infact when Blake was skilled enough and trusted enough to be given posts on smaller ships. Eventually, he began to serve as an engineer aboard small destroyers, which of course came with a pay raise and extra experience.

By the time ww1 broke out between the great powers of Europe. Flanagan's work as a fledgling and enthusiastic engineer reached the ears of the Royal Navy and he was transferred to become one of the engineers of a pre dreadnought and become a member of the so-called grand fleet.
This would only last a little over a year before the Red Cross took an interest in him. After a series of events which Flanagan would view as a chipper folly, he was assigned to the HMHS Britannic as an engineer.
