Biography:

William L. Downing was born on May 24, 1891 in London to well-known Harley Street physician Oswald Downing and his wife Elizabeth. It was William's father himself who assisted in the delivery. From an early age William desired to follow his father into the medical field. He essentially grew up around the medical profession and even witnessed some surgeries. He attended medical school at Oxford, graduating in 1914. After that, he planned to join his father at his practice and eventually start his own.

The outbreak of the First World War put a pause on those plans. Feeling that his abilities in the medical field would be useful to the war effort, William enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He worked on a few hospital ships and rather quickly rose through the ranks, eventually attaining the rank of Lieutenant by the Fall of 1916. Some argue that this was influenced by his famous father, but that has never been proven. William attests that his medical talents were the only factor in his rapid advancement.

He has been assigned to the HMHS Britannic to evacuate and assist wounded soldiers from the Middle Eastern theater of operations in Mudros, Greece. He anticipates this will be just another routine hospital ship voyage. Aside from his unquestionable abilities in the medical field, William is also a talented pianist, having done so for fellow RAMC personnel on many outbound voyages.
