Biography:

Born on April 30th 1889, Mark Hemming had a very quiet life in England like any other. In 1897, he met Chris Brown during a vacation trip to Southampton. The two quickly became best friends and wrote letters to each other about how they were doing. Chris gained a passion for Ocean liners especially after being aboard the Oceanic of White star line in 1899. Mark was also fascinate by ships. During their free time, they often talked about the latest news of ships. Both were aboard the “Big four” of WSL and Cunard’s Lusitania. Chris wasn’t comfortable with the fast speeds so Mark went aboard Mauritania alone. Mark moved to NYC in 1909 to begin his new adult life while Chris stayed in his home in Southampton and hang out with others. More letters were written for the next 2 years, not really ship related just personal stuff.

The passion for ships returned in may of 1911 when White Star Line announced their brand new Olympic class ocean liners. Both of course wanted to experience all three of them. After the Maiden Voyage of the RMS Olympic, Chris began his move to the NYC. Mark was happy to help and the months went by. The process was delayed twice. First on September 20,1911, Olympic was on her fifth Voyage when she was in a collision with the HMS Hawke. Second being in late February when she threw a propeller blade. On the last day of March 1912, the second ship in the Olympic class was completed, RMS Titanic. The moving process for Chris was also completed that week. Mark and Chris would be aboard for the Maiden Voyage.

The Carpathia arrives at the site around 3:30AM. Mark is one of the last to climb aboard. Soon he learns that Chris was among the 1,496 people lost and buried at sea. Mark was seriously injured and now devastated by the loss. He kept the surname Brown to never forget the impact Chris had on his life. After Carpathia arrived in New York on April 18th, Mark spent 6 weeks in the hospital. Once he recovered, he didn’t speak much of the disaster. However he quickly recovered and moved on, talking about the disaster a bit more often. August 1914: The Great War had begun. Mark first served as a RAMC aboard the Mauritania, before transferring to the Britannic in August of 1916 to also fulfill Chris’ dream. It was now the 12th of November 1916. Some months have passed.
