Biography:

Born in Liverpool, England, to parents Josiah Parker and Henrietta Parker, as an only child. James fell in love with art and would often visit the art museum after school. During his teen years, he also discovered another side of himself besides his love for art: a fascination with the sea. After sailing on a Cunard liner following his high school graduation, he decided to pursue a career at sea.

He began working for the Leyland Line, serving on ships such as the Canadian, Bohemian, and Californian as a deckhand. At age twenty-three, in 1912, James joined the Royal Navy, where he earned the rank of Petty Officer. That same year, thanks to his experience, he was able to join the White Star Line, where he was given the role of Master-at-Arms. He served on ships such as the Adriatic and Oceanic and was aboard the Olympic during the events of April 14th/15th, 1912.

In 1914, the First World War broke out. James served aboard the Olympic after it had been converted into a troopship. Now, in 1916, he was called to serve on the HMHS Britannic, which had been turned into a hospital ship bound for Naples to pick up wounded soldiers. Now stationed in Southampton, James boarded the Britannic at the White Star pier as it set sail for Mudros on its sixth round trip.
