Biography:
Arthur Finch, 30 years old, is a man of iron and steam, serving as Third Assistant Engineer aboard the HMHS Britannic. Born in a working-class neighborhood near the London docks, his life has been forged by machinery. He started from the bottom, as an apprentice in shipyards at fourteen, but instead of jumping straight to the giants of the White Star Line, Arthur carved out his career in smaller merchant shipping companies. It was a long road of dirty work, makeshift repairs, and slow promotions until his skill and reliability caught attention. His big break came just before the war on the RMS Laurentic, his first large passenger liner. Following the requisition of the Britannic as a hospital ship, Arthur was one of the most capable engineers transferred to manage its enormous and modern engines. This is his first voyage on the Britannic, so while he is familiar with the technology, he is still learning the specific details and quirks of this particular vessel.
Despite his work in the noisy heart of the ship, Arthur is a naturally affable man who values the camaraderie of the crew. He is a familiar face beyond the engineers' circle, thanks to his dry and practical humor. Arthur doesn't mind if a story is a bit exaggerated or if the teller is a little tipsy; he's always willing to listen to a good sea tale, especially if it's served with strong tea or an illicit drink. His duty is mechanical efficiency, and he despises melodrama, but he is not socially fastidious: titles and classes mean nothing to him, only whether a person knows how to do their job and if they have something interesting to say.
His greatest motivation is duty and the need to return home to his wife, Emily, and his young daughter, Lily, whose photo he keeps in his pocket. They are his anchor. His work on the Britannic is a crucial responsibility for the war effort, and he will ensure that the ship keeps its boilers burning. He isn't worried about "bad luck" or superstitions; the real danger lies in the Aegean, and he is ready to face it with grimy hands and a willing heart.
