Biography:
Willis E. Levitt was born in Liverpool, England, on February 13th, 1892. He first went to sea in 1911, age 19, serving as a cook aboard the Leyland Line cargo ship, SS Winifredian, for a year. The next year, he moved to Southampton and began working aboard White Star Liners including RMS Oceanic (1912-1913) and RMS Olympic (1913-1914), continuing to serve as a cook throughout. Upon Britain's entry into the First World War, Willis began serving aboard the recently requisitioned, SS Cymric. On May 8th, 1916, Willis was aboard and on duty when the ship was torpedoed and sunk by U-20. The impact violently threw Willis back in the galley and he suffered a broken left leg. Fortunately, some crew members carried him out just in time and Willis would survive the sinking. He would spend the next few months recovering from his injuries and trauma before signing up aboard the HMHS Britannic in October of that year. By November 1916, Willis was age 24 and stood at 5"10 and weighed 65 kg. He had brown hair, blue eyes, and light stubble between his nose and upper lip. His occupation was that of a ship's cook, residing in Southampton, England.
