Biography:

George Carter was born into a middle-class family in Manchester, the son of a pharmacist and a literature teacher. He graduated in medicine from the University of Manchester in 1912 and worked as a junior doctor at St Mary's Hospital. At the outbreak of war he volunteered for the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC), but was posted not to the front but to hospital ships, where he served as a doctor at sea. Before being appointed to Britannic, he served briefly on the hospital ship HMHS Galeka. He joined Britannic in 1916 as part of the medical officers responsible for the care of patients and sanitary procedures during the transport of wounded from the Eastern Front.
