Родился в семье бедных рабочих из 6 детей и когда только подрос того уже в 8 лет родители заставили работать на шахтах, а в 13 лет тот пошёл туда где больше платят, на флот. Работал в кочегарках, за годы работы он особо сильно не отличился, но за 13 лет тот побывал в многих уголках мира, в Индии, Африке, Белизе, правда он почти никогда не мог покинуть корабль. В 1916 году того перевели на Britannic и вместе с этим повысили до *старшего кочегара*. В связи с тем что на такое большое судно нужны лучшие из лучших, кто кроме как он годиться на такое, за одно это госпитальное судно и по идее должно быть более безопасным, таковы были мысли Рикардо когда он попросил о переводе.
