Rosaleen Connally was born on the 28th of March, 1889, in Whiteabbey, County Ulster, Ireland, United Kingdom. Her father, Donald Connally, was/is a wealthy business owner in the Belfast area, and so young Rosie grew up fairly comfortably in the north of the Emerald Isle. Her blood runs only about three-quarters Irish, though, with much of her father's ancestors having come from England a century or so ago. She often spent summers traveling between Ireland and Great Britain to visit relatives, and so she was used to occasional sea voyages. When she reached majority she began working in various high middle-class jobs alongside her mother and sister, most prominently as a seamstress. When the war began in 1914 and Britannia sounded the drums of war, her eldest brother and a couple cousins from Manchester set off for Belgium while they continued to hold the home front. As it turned out, some of her... fellow Irish began to get a bit uppity in the following years. Most prominently in April 1916 when the Easter Rising in Dublin interrupted business up north for a moment. For the first time in a while, the idea of a free Ireland was a real possibility in people's minds... and Donald Connally would have none of it. He wouldn't lose his business ties to a bunch of upstart rebels. Rosie, meanwhile, had kept her head low, and after some encouragement from friends decided to give her part in Britain's war effort. She trained and joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment of the Royal Army Medical Corps, signing her contract in September 1916 and being assigned to His Majesty's Hospital Ship 'Britannic' for six months. For the Ulsterwoman this will be her third roundtrip aboard the vessel.
