Henry J. Maydan was born on the 22th Of August,1887 on the English town of Scarborough, North Yorkshire. His paternal family the Maydan’s had a strong connection to sea, his father having survived the sinking of the Atlantic, despite his whole family having survived the ordeal (his siblings were the only ones onboard since their parents couldn't afford) He swore to never touch the sea again, the trauma hitting hard. After even refusing to board a ferry, he was finally convinced by his sister. Both brothers emigrated to United Kingdom in search for a better life, his parents despite having business at Liverpool joined. The whole Maydan Clan ended up settling on Scarborough. He was the 2nd of four siblings and was the one who struggled the most and also the smartest. His studies proved a disaster when dealing with Mathematics. Thankfully, this did not affect Henry, during his free time he learned to swim and would often do Newspaper Selling Jobs to earn himself some extra money. But everything changed when his sister, Mary married the Chief Woodworker of Swan Hunter & Co. Henry fell in love with ships, and decided to dedicate his life to them. Curiously, his friend James Paul Moody also wanted to dedicate his life to them. Both men went off for the HMS Conway were they spent 4 years of cadetship. After graduating from the Conway on December 1903, the boys went to have an apprenticeship Boadicea, 4 years also followed and in 1907 the boys successfully passed their Second Mate’s Certificate. On 1908 he passed his First Mate’s Certificate and joined Dominion Line’s Ottawa (Ex Germanic) Eventually, the vessel was sold by 1910 and Henry seeked employment at the Cunard Line, which was currently also seeking young junior Officers. He joined the Carpathia, as her Fourth Officer, his stay on the Carpathia was prolonged until Christmas 1912. When after New Year, he was asked to join the “Lusitania” he did so, as he'd Third Junior Officer. While at watch, 2 days after leaving Liverpool a rogue wave hitted the ship head in and nearly threw Henry out of the Bridge, which was crushed by the waves. Soon after this, Henry became engaged to Claudia Castellano, a Spanish girl who came from a wealthy textile family. Wanting to provide more for her, he joined the White Star Line who was seeking officers for their Liverpool - New York service. Joining the Baltic as Sixth Officer. He was quickly promoted to Fifth Officer, despite this he accepted a demotion to serve on the Oceanic as Sixth Officer. Captain Haddock took a good like to him, and decided that he shall accompany him to the Olympic. Just like that he found himself on the Olympic in April 1912. After the Titanic disaster Henry remained with the Olympic until September when she was sent for a full safety refit. After she was sent for the refit he served on the Oceanic briefly as Fourth Officer. By 1913 Olympic was ready and Henry got the opportunity to complete 3 round trips but bad luck struck him when he underwent his annual board of Trade exams which deemed him unable to be a Navigational Officer because he had brief colour blindness in one eye. He dropped his Officers Uniform and changed it into a Purser’s Uniform but Captain Turner, his former Cunard master and friend. He gave him work on the Mauretania, and he became her Assistant Purser, and when His Majesty the King visited Second Purser. Henry proved popular and followed Turner through all his commands. After telling the press “None civilised civilization would attack and torpedo the Lusitania” really came shockingly fast as the ship sank at his feet on barely 18 minutes. He survived by luckily being a Passanger on that voyage as he was he as he was heading to England to meet his sister. After the loss of the Lusitania, he lost his job and berth on the Cunard Line, and was then assigned to the Arabic recommended by the Admiralty which was sunk months later. After briefly serving as Assistant Purser on the Adriatic. One of his greatest assets was that Henry himself could either work as a Steward or a Purser. On September 1916, he was called in to fill the sick leave of the Chief Steward and so he did. Later crew would remind him as "Someone determined to do his job right, insisting that each soldier be treated as they were a Passanger and with the up most respect." He will be berthed on C Deck aft.
